Chaozhou, in eastern Guangdong, grew up on the west bank of the Han River, and its ancient core is still easy to pick out on a map. The old town is a tight rectangle of narrow lanes, bounded by traces of its walls along the river. Its streets run at right angles, with small courtyards packed between them.
Across the river rises Bijia Mountain, where a temple honours the Tang-dynasty scholar Han Yu, who briefly served as an official here. The river is said to be named after him. The Guangji Bridge links the two banks, an ancient crossing that combines stone piers with a floating section of pontoon boats that can be opened.
A Chaozhou map poster shows the contrast between the dense grain of the historic town, the broad band of the Han River and the green slopes to the east. The city is known for Teochew cuisine, opera and gongfu tea culture. Its plan shares their sense of order and restraint.
