Chapchal, the seat of Qapqal Xibe Autonomous County, lies on the southern side of the Ili River valley in western Xinjiang, across the river from Yining. On a map the town is a compact grid set among long, narrow field parcels, with the braided channels of the Ili to the north and the foothills of the Tianshan ranges rising beyond the farmland to the south.
The county is the heartland of the Xibe people, whose ancestors were sent here as a frontier garrison from north-east China in the eighteenth century. Their descendants dug irrigation canals along the valley that still water the farmland today, and the Xibe language and script have been kept alive here long after they faded in the community's original homeland.
A Chapchal map poster shows how water organises everything in this valley. Canal lines run parallel to the river, field boundaries follow them in long strips, and the town's straight streets sit in the middle like a small, orderly island between river and mountain.
