Cheb lies in the far west of the Czech Republic, close to the Bavarian border, on the banks of the Ohře river. The old town sits on higher ground above the water. On the map, its elongated central square stands out: a long, gently sloping space lined by close-packed burgher houses. The streets around it follow a compact medieval layout.
At the northwestern edge of the old town, Cheb Castle rises on a rock above the river. It was built as an imperial palace in the time of Frederick Barbarossa, and its Black Tower is still a landmark. The town is also known for Špalíček, a cluster of timber-framed houses in the square, and as the place where Albrecht von Wallenstein was murdered in 1634.

Cheb Castle stands on a rocky spur over the river, marking the northwest edge of the old town. Its outline is compact and fortress-like.

The Ohře curves below the historic centre and separates the old town from newer districts. It gives the print a strong flowing line.
