Ch’ench’a sits high in the Gamo highlands of southern Ethiopia, well above the Rift Valley floor and the town of Arba Minch. The road up from the lowlands winds through a long series of bends, and on a map these switchbacks are one of the most striking features. The town itself spreads along the high ground, with streets and paths following the contours of steep, cultivated slopes.
The area is known for the Dorze people, whose villages nearby are famous for tall, beehive-shaped houses made of bamboo and ensete leaves and for fine hand-woven cotton cloth. From the highlands there are views down toward Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo on clear days. The cool climate and terraced fields give the district a character quite different from the hot plains below.
