Chiavari faces the Gulf of Tigullio on the Riviera di Levante. It spreads across a small coastal plain at the mouth of the Entella river. Most towns on this steep coast have little flat ground, but Chiavari has room to spread out. Its historic centre follows an unusually orderly pattern of parallel streets running toward the sea.
Many of its best-known streets are lined with long stone arcades, the portici that shade shops along the old main thoroughfare. The town also gave its name to the light Chiavari chair, made here since the early nineteenth century and still common in dining rooms and event halls. Behind the plain, wooded hills rise quickly toward the Apennines.
