Chicoloapan lies on the eastern side of the Valley of Mexico, in the State of México, where the metropolitan area spreads toward the foot of the mountains. Its historic centre is a small cluster of streets around a church and plaza, the core of what was once a farming village. Around it, the city has expanded rapidly over the last few decades.
Most of that growth came as large planned housing estates, and on the map they are unmistakable: tight rows of identical plots, closed loops and cul-de-sacs, each development forming its own self-contained pattern. Seen together they create a striking texture, almost like fabric, that contrasts sharply with the irregular streets of the old town and the open land still remaining on the edges.
