Chiềng Cơi is part of Sơn La city in the mountains of north-western Vietnam. The whole city fills a long valley, hemmed in by steep hills. That shows clearly on a map: streets run along the valley floor in close, parallel lines and then stop abruptly where the slopes begin. Beyond that edge, only a few winding roads climb into the surrounding high ground.
Sơn La is the capital of its province and a stop on the roads that link the north-western uplands with Hanoi. Around the city, the land breaks into ridges, terraces and small side valleys. Each side valley carries its own thin line of houses and lanes, and on the map these appear as narrow fingers of settlement.
