From above, Chitral is shaped mainly by its river. The town runs along the floor of a steep valley in the far north of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and its streets have little room to spread. Roads follow the water, lanes climb a short way up the lower slopes, and then the mountain terrain takes over and the drawing of streets stops.
The town has long been the seat of the former princely state of Chitral. Its fort and the Shahi Mosque stand close to the riverbank, and on clear days the high peak of Tirich Mir, the tallest summit of the Hindu Kush, closes off the view to the north. Chitral is also the usual starting point for journeys into the Kalash valleys.

The historic fort and the Shahi Mosque sit near the water at the centre of town. This is the old seat of the rulers of Chitral.
