Christiana lies on the northern bank of the Vaal River, which here forms the boundary between North West and the Free State. The town follows a regular grid typical of nineteenth-century South African towns, with long straight streets across flat grassland. The river curves along its southern side, and later residential areas spread out beyond the older centre.
The town was founded in 1870 and named after a daughter of President M. W. Pretorius. It grew during the rush for alluvial diamonds along the Vaal, and small-scale digging continued in the district for decades. Today the N12 passes through, linking it with Kimberley to the southwest and Johannesburg to the northeast, and much of the town's traffic still follows that road.
