Chumphon sits where southern Thailand narrows toward the peninsula, a provincial capital a short distance inland from the Gulf of Thailand. On the map the town reads as a compact core of streets beside a winding river, with the railway line and main highway running north to south along the isthmus. Beyond the built-up area, the sheet fills with farmland, orchards and the fringes of the coast.
For many travellers the town is a waypoint: trains and buses stop here on the long route south, and boats leave from nearby piers for Ko Tao and the other islands of the gulf. That transit role shows in the plan, with the station, the through roads and the routes toward the sea giving the town its orientation. A Chumphon map poster keeps that sense of a place in between.
