The Yalu River
The river runs along the edge of the town and doubles as the international border. On the map it is a wide, steady line that sets the orientation of everything around it.

El mapa
Chunggang Map Poster & Print
Chunggang lies in the far north of Chagang Province, on the south bank of the Yalu River, which forms the border between North Korea and China here. The land is mountainous and heavily forested, so the town is squeezed onto the limited flat ground along the river and its side valleys. From above, the built area forms a narrow band rather than a rounded centre.
The town is often described as one of the coldest inhabited places on the Korean Peninsula, because its inland, northern position brings long and severe winters. Detailed public mapping of the area is limited, so the clearest features are the river itself, the roads along the valley floor and the ridges that rise on every side.
A Chunggang map poster is less about dense streets than about setting: a thin line of settlement held between a broad border river and folded hills. The result is a spare, unusual composition. It suits people with a family connection to the region, or anyone drawn to remote places and the geography of borders.

Valley-floor roads
With so little flat land, the main roads follow the valley floor beside the water. Streets and buildings line up along them in a long, narrow strip.
Mountain surroundings
Forested ridges rise on all sides of the settlement. In the design they become open space that frames the small cluster of streets and gives it scale.

Per què Chunggang
Un mapa amb significat
Some maps are hung for their complexity, others for their stillness. Chunggang belongs to the second group: a quiet image of a river, a valley and a town at the edge of a country. For someone with roots in the north of Korea it can carry real weight.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Download HD files for $9 in six print sizes, or order a matte printed poster from print partners in more than 30 countries.
