Cincinnati is set on the north bank of the Ohio River, and the river's broad curve forms the southern edge of the map. Downtown occupies a basin at the water's edge, surrounded by steep hillsides, and neighbourhoods climb and spill over the ridges beyond. Across the river, Covington and Newport in Kentucky mirror the city's grid.
Just north of downtown, Over-the-Rhine holds one of the largest collections of nineteenth-century Italianate architecture in the United States. The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, opened in 1866, was a forerunner of Roebling's later Brooklyn Bridge. The city is also home to the Reds, whose predecessor, the 1869 Red Stockings, was the first openly professional baseball team.
A Cincinnati map poster reads as a meeting of grid and terrain. The downtown blocks are tight and regular, the Mill Creek valley and the interstates cut north through the city, and the hills break the streets into winding patterns.
