Cobourg sits on the north shore of Lake Ontario, roughly midway between Toronto and Kingston, in Northumberland County. The town's map is organised around the lake: the downtown grid runs to the water, where a harbour and marina are protected by piers, and a long sandy beach stretches east of the harbour.
King Street forms the main commercial axis, running east–west through downtown, and Victoria Hall, the town's grand nineteenth-century town hall, stands near its centre. North of the old grid, streets widen into later residential neighbourhoods, and Highway 401 crosses the town's northern edge on its route along the lake.
