Cochrane sits in the valley of the Bow River, where the land rises from the prairie toward the foothills and the Rocky Mountains. On a map, the historic centre lies near the river flats, while newer neighbourhoods spread across the slopes on both sides with curving streets and crescents. Highways lead east toward Calgary and north and south along the edge of the foothills.
The town takes its name from the Cochrane Ranche, established in 1881 as one of the first large cattle ranches in western Canada, and its historic site is now a park on the edge of town. Cochrane has grown quickly in recent decades as people look for a smaller community within reach of Calgary, while keeping its western ranching character.
