Conflans-Sainte-Honorine takes its name from its position at the confluence of the Seine and the Oise, just northwest of Paris. From above, the two rivers meet in a wide, clear Y. The old town rises up a slope on the northern bank, with narrow streets climbing toward the church and the heights above. Newer neighbourhoods spread across the plateau and along the riverbanks.
The town is known as the French capital of batellerie, inland river shipping. For generations the families who worked the barges lived and moored here, and péniches still line the quays. A museum dedicated to river shipping occupies the Château du Prieuré, and every June the town holds a national festival for boatmen.
