Cordeiro lies in the mountainous interior of Rio de Janeiro state, in the Serrana region, well inland from the coast. The town fills a valley floor, so its map is long and narrow. The main streets run along the lowest ground and side streets climb a short way up the hillsides before stopping where the slopes get too steep.
The town is known across the state for its annual agricultural exhibition, a large fair that draws visitors from the surrounding highland towns. Around the built-up area, the map shows rounded hills and pastures crossed by rural roads, a landscape typical of the dairy and farming country between the mountains and the plains.
