Córdoba lies in the mountainous centre of Veracruz, on the lower slopes that lead up toward Pico de Orizaba, Mexico's highest peak. The historic centre is laid out as a regular colonial grid around a central square, and the map shows those square blocks clearly before the pattern bends and breaks at the edges, where ravines and streams cut into the slope.
The city was founded in 1618 by thirty Spanish families, which is why it is sometimes called the City of the Thirty Knights. In 1821 the Treaty of Córdoba, which established Mexico's independence from Spain, was signed here, in a building on the main square. The surrounding hills have long been known for coffee, and farmland fills much of the map beyond the city.
