Corigliano Scalo grew up around the railway station serving Corigliano Calabro, which is where the word scalo, meaning station or stop, comes from. While the historic town sits on a hill inland, the scalo developed on the flat coastal plain below, and its map looks entirely different: straight roads, regular blocks and a clear line of tracks.
Since 2018 the area has been part of the merged municipality of Corigliano-Rossano, one of the largest in Calabria. The plain around it belongs to the wider Sibaritide, an agricultural area of citrus and olive groves opening onto the Gulf of Taranto.
