Corinto sits on flat, narrow ground on Nicaragua's Pacific coast. On one side the ocean shoreline runs almost straight; on the other, a calm bay breaks into channels and mangrove edges. The town's streets fill the space between them in a compact grid, so from above the settlement looks like a thin band of blocks held between two very different kinds of water.
The town is best known as Nicaragua's main Pacific port, and its quays and cargo areas face the sheltered side of the bay rather than the open sea. Road and rail links run inland towards Chinandega. On a map the port facilities make a denser, more angular edge, and the orderly streets behind them give way to marsh and water.
A Corinto map poster shows a coastline that is not quite mainland and not quite island. The black-and-white treatment brings out the contrast between the straight ocean beach and the ragged, branching estuary behind it. The bay takes up much of the frame, and the narrow strip of town holds the composition together.

The working port
Nicaragua's principal Pacific harbour faces the bay side. Its piers and storage areas form the most geometric shapes in the composition, set against the softer lines of the water.
Mangrove channels
Behind the town, estuary channels wind through low wetland. They add fine, branching lines that fill the background of the print with detail and set off the tight street grid.
