Couëron stretches along the north bank of the Loire just downstream from Nantes, where the river widens toward the estuary. The southern edge of the map is defined by water and wetland. Channels, islands and marshes lie between the town and the main river, and the built-up area extends inland in a series of neighbourhoods.
The town's best-known landmark is the Tour à plomb, a tall shot tower from the industrial era when lead works operated beside the river. Couëron is also linked to John James Audubon, the naturalist and painter of the birds of America, who spent part of his childhood here before leaving for the United States.
A Couëron map poster shows the Loire as a wide pale band, its edges lined with drainage channels and marsh parcels. The old riverside centre and later residential areas form a spreading street pattern to the north. It is a landscape of estuary and town in almost equal parts.
