Cremona sits on the north bank of the Po in the flat farmland of southern Lombardy. From above, the city is a compact, rounded core bounded by ring boulevards that follow the line of its former walls. Beyond them, suburbs and fields extend across the plain, and to the south the river's wide floodplain makes a broad, green edge.
The city's centre is the Piazza del Comune, one of the finest medieval squares in Italy, with the cathedral, the baptistery and the Torrazzo, a very tall brick bell tower. Cremona is also the city of violin making. Amati, Stradivari and Guarneri worked here, and the craft is still practised in workshops around the centre.
