Cruzeiro lies in the Paraíba valley in the far east of São Paulo state, close to the borders with Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. From above, the town stretches along the valley floor, and the most noticeable features are the lines that run through it in parallel: the Paraíba do Sul river, a railway corridor and the main road links.
The centre has a compact grid of short blocks near the old station, a reminder that the town grew as a railway junction. Beyond it, neighbourhoods spread across the flatter land by the river, while to the north the terrain begins to climb toward the Serra da Mantiqueira, and streets start to bend with the hills.
The Mantiqueira passes above the town were strategically important during the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932, and Cruzeiro remains a gateway into the mountains. A Cruzeiro map poster frames this meeting of valley and serra in an orderly, legible design.
