Cullera stands on the Valencian coast where the Júcar River, known locally as the Xúquer, meets the Mediterranean. On a map it is one of the most recognisable towns in the region: a rocky hill rises almost straight from the flat plain, the old town sits between that slope and the river, and the coast runs away to the north in a long line of beaches.
The hill is crowned by a medieval castle and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Castle, visible from far across the rice fields. On its seaward side a lighthouse marks the cape. North of the town the shore becomes a strip of apartment blocks and sand, while inland the land flattens into the wetlands and paddies at the southern end of the Albufera natural park.
