Cumberland sits in the far west of Maryland, where Wills Creek flows into the North Branch of the Potomac River. The city fills a tight space between ridges, and from above its streets fan out along the valleys and climb the lower slopes. Just northwest of downtown, Wills Creek passes through the Narrows, a deep gap in the mountain that roads and railways have used for two centuries.
The city grew from Fort Cumberland, a colonial outpost of the 1750s, and became a transport hub. The National Road, the first major federally funded highway in the United States, began here, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal ended here. Today the canal towpath meets the Great Allegheny Passage in town, forming a continuous trail between Pittsburgh and Washington.
