Curepipe lies on the central plateau of Mauritius at more than 500 metres above sea level, which makes it one of the coolest and rainiest towns on the island. Its streets do not follow a strict grid. Instead they bend around gentle slopes, gardens and wooded plots, giving the map a relaxed, organic texture quite unlike the coastal towns.
The most striking shape is Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcanic crater close to the town centre, drawn as an almost perfect ring encircled by a road. Nearby, the Curepipe Botanical Garden and the grounds of the Royal College add open spaces to the pattern, while the town hall recalls the colonial wooden architecture that once filled the area.
The main road between Port Louis and the south passes through, linking Curepipe to the neighbouring towns of the Plaines Wilhems.
