Curitiba, the capital of Paraná, sits on a plateau more than nine hundred metres above sea level in southern Brazil. The city is widely studied for its planning, and the map shows why: structural axes run outward from the centre, each carrying dedicated bus lanes flanked by taller buildings, with quieter residential blocks filling the spaces between. It is a plan with a visible logic.
In the 1970s Curitiba built one of the first bus rapid transit systems in the world, later adding its tube-shaped boarding stations, and turned Rua XV de Novembro into one of Brazil's first pedestrian streets. Former quarries and flood-prone valleys became parks such as Barigui, Tanguá and the Botanical Garden, and the Ópera de Arame, a theatre of steel tubes, stands in an old quarry.

A large park along the Barigui River on the west side of the city, with a lake that appears as an open, curving shape among the residential streets.
Historic centre
Around Largo da Ordem and the pedestrian Rua XV de Novembro the blocks are smaller and older, forming the densest cluster of streets on the poster.
