Curitibanos lies in the uplands of central Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. The land here is higher and cooler than on the coast. It is rolling country with farmland, pastures and remnants of the araucaria forest that once covered much of the plateau. On the map, the town appears as a compact grid of streets set among wide open fields.
Main roads lead out of town in several directions and link it with other plateau towns. Small streams and patches of woodland break up the surrounding farmland. The town serves as a centre for the agricultural region around it, and its layout reflects that role: a busy core, with residential streets thinning out toward the countryside.
