Dandeli sits on the Kali River in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, surrounded by the dense forest of the Western Ghats. On the map, the town is an island of streets in a large green area. The river winds past it, and the road network gets thinner as it reaches into the woods.
The town grew around the West Coast Paper Mills, and the mill and its housing colonies still shape parts of the town plan. Dandeli is also the gateway to the Kali Tiger Reserve. The river attracts visitors who come for white-water rafting and to explore the forest.
