Datong lies in the far south of Chongqing Municipality, not far from the Guizhou border, in a region of ridges, terraced slopes and narrow valleys. From above, the town does not spread out evenly the way lowland towns do. Its streets gather on the flatter ground and stretch in whatever direction the terrain allows, giving the map an elongated, organic outline.
Roads wind in from neighbouring towns following contours rather than straight lines, and the built-up area thins quickly where the ground rises. Smaller clusters of buildings sit along these routes like beads on a string, a pattern common across rural Chongqing, where every usable level patch of land has long been put to work.
Datong is not a town with a famous skyline, and that is exactly its appeal.
