Dellys lies on the Algerian coast in Boumerdès Province, east of Algiers, where a promontory pushes into the Mediterranean. From above, the town clings to the slope between hills and sea. A small harbour sits in the shelter of the headland, and the coastline beyond it runs in long, clean curves that give the map a strong outer edge.
The site has been occupied since antiquity, and it was known in Roman times as Rusuccuru. Its old casbah, a maze of narrow lanes on the hillside above the port, is the best-known part of the town and was badly damaged in the 2003 Boumerdès earthquake. Newer districts spread out along the coast and inland roads.

The small port is marked by its protective walls, sharp straight lines set against the curve of the coast, sheltered by the headland on which the town stands.
Mediterranean coastline
The shore runs away east and west in long arcs, and the sea fills a large part of the frame, leaving the town as a compact shape on its edge.
