Delos is a narrow, rocky island between Mykonos and Rheneia, at the centre of the ring of islands that gave the Cyclades their name. It has no town and almost no modern streets, so its map looks unlike most others: an irregular outline, a single low hill and a dense network of ancient foundations along the western shore, facing a sheltered channel.
In Greek mythology Delos is the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. For centuries it was one of the most important sanctuaries in the Greek world, and later it became a busy free port. The archaeological site covers much of the island, with the sanctuary near the old harbour, residential quarters to the south, and the Terrace of the Lions above what was once the Sacred Lake.
Above the ruins rises Mount Kynthos, a modest summit with a view across the surrounding islands. The whole island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and most people visit on day trips by boat from Mykonos. The island's only hill rises east of the ruins. It is low, but it stands out on such a flat, narrow island, and a path climbs to its summit from the ancient town.
Channel with Rheneia
A narrow strait separates Delos from the larger island of Rheneia to the west. It gives the map a clean pair of coastlines and frames the sheltered water where ancient ships once anchored.
