Dinar is a town in Afyonkarahisar Province in western Turkey, on the upland edge of inner Anatolia. It lies close to the springs that feed the Büyük Menderes, the river known in antiquity as the Maeander, whose looping course gave the word meander to many languages. On the map the town sits at the foot of hills, with open plain stretching beyond.
The site has a deep past. Dinar stands on or near the ancient city of Apamea, and before it Celaenae, an important stop on routes across Anatolia. Today the town has a compact centre and a regular pattern of later streets, much of it rebuilt after the earthquake that struck Dinar in 1995, which explains the orderly layout of many blocks.

After the 1995 earthquake much of Dinar was reconstructed, and the map shows a centre of fairly regular blocks and straight streets.
