Downtown Los Angeles lies close to the site of the pueblo founded in 1781, and its street grid still follows the Spanish colonial orientation, turned at an angle to the compass instead of running north to south. Freeways almost completely surround it. The 110, the 101 and the 10, with the river corridor to the east, mark the district's edges on a map.
Inside the ring the district divides into recognisable parts. Bunker Hill rises in the northwest, with the Walt Disney Concert Hall and a cluster of towers. The historic core along Broadway and Spring Street holds early twentieth-century theatres and office buildings. Little Tokyo, the Arts District and the Fashion District fill the eastern and southern blocks.
Union Station, completed in 1939, gathers the rail lines on the northern edge near Olvera Street, and the Los Angeles River runs in its concrete channel just to the east.
