El mapa
East London Map Poster & Print
East London sits on South Africa's Indian Ocean coast in the Eastern Cape, and its map is framed by water on several sides. The Buffalo River meets the sea in a deep, curving mouth that holds the harbour, and further north-east the Nahoon River cuts another inlet through the coast. Between them, the city centre and residential suburbs spread over gently rolling land above a line of beaches.
The harbour is notable as South Africa's only major river port. The city is also linked to one of the best-known zoological discoveries of the twentieth century: in 1938 a coelacanth, a fish believed extinct for millions of years, was identified here after being caught offshore. The original specimen is kept at the East London Museum.
An East London map poster places the coastline and the two river mouths at the centre of the composition. The streets reach toward the sea in curving patterns, while the port and the river bend create strong shapes on the southern side. It is a map that feels open to the ocean.

Ocean shoreline
A line of beaches and rocky points runs along the city's eastern side, giving the map a long, clean edge where land meets the Indian Ocean.
