Einbeck lies in southern Lower Saxony, between the Solling hills and the Leine valley, on the small Ilme river. Its old town is among the best-preserved in northern Germany, with many half-timbered houses lining streets that lead out from the market square. The medieval street pattern is still intact and clearly legible from above.
Einbeck was a member of the Hanseatic League and grew wealthy on its beer, which was exported across northern Europe. The strong beer brewed here gave rise to the name Bock, a corruption of the town's name as pronounced in Munich. Brewing continues today, and the town remains closely associated with the style.
