Ekpé lies in the Ouémé department of Benin, on the coastal corridor between Cotonou and Porto-Novo. This part of the country is a narrow band of land between the Atlantic Ocean to the south and a system of lagoons and wetlands to the north. As the two cities have grown, the land between them has filled with homes and streets.
From above, the structure is simple and strong. A main coastal road runs east to west, carrying traffic between the two cities, and neighbourhoods extend north and south from it. To the south, the sandy coastline forms a clean straight edge. To the north, the land becomes wetter and the street network grows looser as it approaches the lagoon.
An Ekpé map poster shows how the town is shaped by these boundaries. The straight line of the shore, the long axis of the main road and the dense residential grid between them create a horizontal composition that is easy to read. In a minimal print, it is the coast and the corridor, not individual landmarks, that define the place.

The main road linking Cotonou and Porto-Novo passes through the area. It is the dominant line on the map, with neighbourhoods branching off on both sides.

North of the road, the streets thin out towards wetter land and the lagoon system, giving the map a softer, more open upper edge.
