El Bagre stands on the Nechí River in the lowlands of northern Antioquia, where the Andes give way to flat, wet land. On a map the river is the main line: a wide, curving channel with the town set against one bank, a close grid of blocks facing the water and thinning out into roads and open land behind it.
The town has long been tied to gold. Alluvial mining along the Nechí has been central to its economy for generations, and the river has served as both a workplace and a transport route.
