Erba lies in the province of Como in Lombardy, on the plain where the Brianza meets the first slopes of the Prealps. Its streets extend along the base of wooded hills, and to the south the small lakes of Alserio and Pusiano sit in the low ground, adding two clear bodies of water to the map.
The town is made up of several historic hamlets that grew together over time, so its street pattern is less a single grid than a cluster of cores joined by connecting roads. Villas, gardens and older village centres give way to newer residential blocks, while the hillsides to the north remain largely green and lightly built.
