Ermenek is in the Taurus Mountains in the south of Karaman Province, far from the plains that most of central Anatolia is known for. The town is built on a steep hillside, and on a map its streets zigzag and step up the slope in short, broken segments, with the valley dropping away below. There is almost no flat ground, and the layout shows it.
The town has a long history as a regional centre and was an important seat under the Karamanid beylik in the medieval period. Some of its old stone buildings and mosques survive from that time. In the valley of the Göksu nearby stands the Ermenek Dam, a tall concrete arch dam that ranks among the highest in Turkey and holds a long, winding reservoir between the mountains.
