ʻEua lies a short hop southeast of Tongatapu and is one of the oldest islands in Tonga. It was raised from the sea rather than built up as a low coral atoll. On a map it stretches from north to south. A ridge runs close to the eastern coast, where the land drops to the Pacific in high limestone cliffs.
The western side slopes more gently, and that is where the roads and villages are. The main settlement, ʻOhonua, sits on the west coast near the wharf. From there a road runs up the island, linking a string of villages and plantations, and the airstrip forms a straight mark among the fields.
The eastern ridge holds ʻEua National Park, with rainforest, caves and lookouts over the cliffs. Humpback whales pass offshore in the southern winter.
