Ezhou stretches along the southern bank of the Yangtze River in eastern Hubei, facing Huanggang across the water and sitting just downstream from Wuhan. From above, the city is defined by water: the wide curve of the river to the north, the irregular shores of Liangzi Lake and other lakes to the south, and a network of channels threading through the flat farmland between them.
Its history reaches back to the Three Kingdoms period, when Sun Quan made the town his capital and renamed it Wuchang, a name later transferred to part of Wuhan. More recently Ezhou became home to Ezhou Huahu Airport, opened in 2022 as one of China's first dedicated cargo hubs. Bridges now link the city to the north bank.

One of Hubei's larger freshwater lakes spreads to the south, its shoreline broken into bays and peninsulas. On the map it becomes a large, intricate shape that balances the dense city.
Xishan Hill
A small wooded hill beside the Yangtze near the old centre, with temples and paths. From above it appears as a quiet, road-free area within the urban fabric.
