Flers is a town in the Orne department of Normandy, set in the bocage, the old landscape of small fields divided by hedgerows. It grew through the nineteenth century as a textile centre, and its layout reflects that period of expansion. On a map, the town spreads over gentle ground, with the small River Vère running through it and roads heading out towards neighbouring towns.
Much of central Flers was destroyed during the fighting of 1944 and rebuilt in the years that followed. The postwar reconstruction gave the centre wider, more regular streets than many Norman towns of its size. At the edge of the centre, the Château de Flers stands in its park, surrounded by water, and the grounds form one of the clearest open spaces on the map.
