Forio is on the western coast of Ischia, the largest island in the Bay of Naples. From above, the town wraps around a small harbour and a rocky headland, then spreads up the lower slopes of Monte Epomeo. Along the coast to the south, the curve of the Bay of Citara adds a softer arc.
On the tip of the promontory stands the Chiesa del Soccorso, a small white church that has become one of the island's most familiar images. Near town is La Mortella, the garden created by the composer William Walton and his wife Susana, and the coastline is also known for its thermal parks.
