Fót lies just north of Budapest in Pest County, on the edge of the capital's suburban belt, where the Gödöllő Hills begin to rise. The town stretches over gentle slopes, with streets following the contours and winding up toward vineyards and woods. On the map, it shows a looser, more rural texture than the dense districts of the city to the south.
Fót is known for its Roman Catholic church, a large romantic-style building by Miklós Ybl with twin towers, and for the Károlyi family's manor. The hillsides were once famous for wine, celebrated in a well-known poem by Mihály Vörösmarty. Main roads and a railway line link the town with Budapest, drawing strong lines through the map.
