Fouriesburg sits in the eastern Free State, a few kilometres from the border with Lesotho. From above, the town is a compact set of right-angled streets, with a larger residential area spread across the ground beside it. Beyond these blocks the map opens into farmland, hill ridges and dry watercourses. The mountains rising to the south and east give the whole area its shape.
The town was founded in the late nineteenth century on land linked to the Fourie family, which gave it its name. During the Anglo-Boer War it briefly served as a seat of the Orange Free State government. That episode is out of proportion to its size and is still the fact most often mentioned about it. The historic core stays small and easy to read on paper.

The sandstone foothills around the town break up the land. Tracks and farm roads curve around the high ground instead of running straight across it.
