Frosinone is the capital of its province in southern Lazio and the main town of the area traditionally called Ciociaria. Its historic centre sits on a hill, where narrow streets follow the contours and curve around the summit. Below, the modern city spreads down toward the valley floor, with the district around the railway station and newer neighbourhoods laid out on flatter ground.
That division between upper and lower town gives the map its character. Winding roads and switchbacks climb the slopes, while the valley below is crossed by straighter streets, the railway between Rome and Naples and the A1 motorway nearby. The city is also known well beyond Lazio thanks to Frosinone Calcio, whose rise to Serie A brought it national attention.
