Füssen sits in the far south of Bavaria at the foot of the Alps, close to the Austrian border. The river Lech runs past the old town, and just downstream to the north it widens into the Forggensee reservoir. The historic centre is a tight knot of lanes below the Hohes Schloss and the former Benedictine monastery of St. Mang, whose large complex shows clearly on the map.
The town is the southern end of the Romantic Road and the nearest town to the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, which lie a short distance to the east. Füssen also has a long history of lute and violin making, a craft that shaped the town for centuries and is still remembered in its museum.
A Füssen map poster shows water in every direction: the Lech, the broad Forggensee and several smaller lakes such as the Weissensee and Hopfensee. Their shapes surround the compact old town, and the mountains beyond leave wide, quiet space along the southern edge of the frame.

This large reservoir stretches north of town and is one of the biggest water shapes on the sheet. Its broad form balances the dense detail of the old centre.

The historic core is a tight cluster of narrow streets gathered around the Hohes Schloss and St. Mang. It reads as the darkest, most intricate part of the poster.
