Galich stands on the shore of Lake Galich in Kostroma Oblast, one of the older towns of northern Russia, first mentioned in medieval chronicles. It was once the seat of a principality, and traces of that importance remain in the landscape. On a map the town lies between the lake and a line of hills, with its streets running down toward the water.
The historic centre follows a regular plan, with a market square and old trading rows at its heart. Above the town rise the remains of the medieval fortress, earthen ramparts on the high ground from which there are wide views across the lake. Churches and monastery grounds mark the edges of the old town, and the railway passes to one side.
