Gangjia lies north-east of Chongqing's central districts, in country where long parallel ridges cross the eastern edge of the Sichuan Basin. Towns here rarely grow in neat squares. Their streets settle on the flatter ground between hills, so the built-up area takes an elongated, irregular outline that follows the shape of the terrain.
On a map this gives a compact core of denser streets, with roads branching outward along the valleys toward surrounding villages. Farmland covers much of the wider landscape. At town scale, though, the poster focuses on the settlement itself: its main roads, the lanes packed between them, and the way its edges thin out into open ground.
