Gangu Chengguanzhen is the seat of Gangu County in eastern Gansu. Like many towns in this part of China, it takes its shape from the land. The built area stretches along the valley of the Wei River, and the loess hills on either side keep the town long and narrow, with main streets running parallel to the water.
The valley has been a corridor for travel between the Chinese heartland and the northwest for a very long time. Today a road and a railway follow the river, and on the map they run alongside the older streets. The Daxiangshan cliff carvings, a well-known Buddhist site, lie in the hills near the town.
